Blood Beat (1985)

For those of you living in the US, this week (Black Friday, the most sacred day of the year in the capitalist calendar) marks the official start of the Christmas season; for those living elsewhere, well, it's close enough. And Christmas means Christmas-themed horror movies, of which I have a very soft spot for. Blood Beat is one of the more odd entries in the ho-ho-horror canon. The plot here is pure nonsense. A brother and sister return home from college for Christmas, and immediately, the brother's new girlfriend begins to have some kind of psychic breakdown upon meeting the mother. And there's a samurai stalking the small town looking for people to hack to death. There are weird psychic battles and WWII stock footage. The director, one Fabrice A. Zaphiratos, did not seem the least bit concerned by the narrative chaos unleashed here. And, yet, it has a surprising level of artistry and suspense to it. At the very least, Blood Beat is thoroughly entertaining. I doubt there are very many other films like it.
