One On Top of the Other (1969)

A free-flowing, jazz-infused giallo set in the sun-baked streets of San Francisco. When the wife of a successful doctor dies, his life seems to be looking up; he can finally be with his true love, and what's more, she's left him a hefty insurance policy. But then he receives a mysterious phone call instructing him to go to a strip club, and it is there he spots his wife's doppelganger. The plot itself is rather predictable, but along with Don't Torture a Duckling, this is perhaps Fulci's most morally passionate film. The final third is as impassioned a rally against capital punishment as any you will ever see. But at the same time, this is a throbbing, stylish, and wild flick. That jazzy score and the quick Godard-esque cuts lend the film a very chic feel. As always with Fulci, the ending is horrid, but there is still plenty to enjoy.
