The Bloodiest (2005)

What a strange film we have on our hands here. The Bloodiest is a Cameroonian erotic science-fiction comedy about two sexy young women who have used their sexual prowess to infiltrate the highest organs of state power in the year 2025. Shot like an MTV music video in high contrast color, with lots of jump cuts, random fades and blurs, and a groovy soundtrack, this was not an easy film to get into. At its heart, The Bloodiest is a satire of contemporary Cameroonian society where corrupt and greedy politicians have eviscerated any sort of normal state function, and use public money to fund their own hedonistic escapades. Oh, wait, this could be any country, really; director Jean-Pierre Bekolo is a sly devil. The problem is, for all its sexy self-indulgent antics, this film lacks any sort of suspense or emotion; it feels too clever for its own good. Like one of the characters says during the film, if it were not for the beautiful women, this country would not be worth a goddamn. This is not to say that The Bloodiest is not a film worth checking out, or that it is a total failure, but there are definitely some missed opportunities. What could have been a searing masterpiece is instead an interesting curio.
