The Trotsky (2009)
Teenage comedies have long featured eccentric and quirky leading characters, but few are as inventive as the hero of this little gem here. Sharing the same birth name as Leon Trotsky, high schooler Leon Bronstein believes himself to be the great revolutionary's reincarnation, and as such, must reenact every key part of his life such as finding his Lenin, being exiled, and marrying an older woman named Alexandra. After trying to start a strike at his father's factory, Leon finds himself pulled out of private school and thrust into the jungle of the local public high school. It is not long, however, before he meets his match in the form of Principal Berkhoff. Leon decides that a revolution is in order to bring about change to his new school. It should be said that this film is definitely not political, despite being named after a figure as political as one can get, this is firmly a teenage comedy, but a good one. The characters are charming, the dialogue is well-written, and the situations absurdly humorous. If you are looking for a movie that will kill an afternoon without killing your brain cells, this is a great choice.
