Lifeforce (1985)

Lifeforce is a movie that could only have been made in the eighties. Featuring sexy nude vampires, ridiculous plot twists and even more ridiculous plot holes, and more bombast than you can shake a stick at. A group of astronauts discovers an abandoned ship in the tail of Hayley's Comet, and it turns out to be populated by space vampires which hitch a ride back to Earth with the shuttle. Chaos ensues. Tobe Hooper was pretty much give free reign here to let his imagination run wild. Shot in super widescreen and glorious saturated color, the images on display here defy reality. You really cannot make this stuff up. Lifeforce really does not feel like an American or British production, and in many ways has more in common with the fine art of giallo, because it so thoroughly takes its own pretensions seriously, while simultaneously winking and nudging at the audience not to do so. The plot is quite complex at times, and the exact nature of the vampires and how they travel from host to host is actually quite head-scratching, but does it matter? Absolutely not! That is the beauty of a film like Lifeforce, you can check your brain at the door, but still come away thinking you have seen something incredibly profound and beautiful. There is even a scene where the protagonist makes out with Patrick Stewart! Do yourself a favor, and see this one right away.
